The World of Thomas Mason
Regarded as one of the top European mills for dress shirting, Thomas Mason is an iconic English heritage brand known for their impeccable quality and timeless heritage appeal.
Founded in Leeds in 1796 by Sir Thomas Mason, the storied mill was one of the first dedicated to manufacturing cotton shirting fabrics. It quickly became a household name among London’s West End tailors—and, eventually, throughout the world. At the outset of World War I in 1914, the mill was called upon to produce water- and fireproof cotton uniforms for British pilots. In 1936, it was appointed exclusive supplier to Turnbull & Asser, shirtmakers to the Royal Family.
In 1992, Thomas Mason was welcomed into Italy’s Albini Group, the largest European manufacturer of shirting fabrics, whose own legacy of textile production gave them the keen eye to discern how foundational British tailoring had been.
With production now based in Italy, the brand maintains its English heritage through a commitment to the historical and aesthetic qualities of their extensive textile design archives—which date back to the 18th century, encompassing over 700 volumes.
